About the course

The aim of this course is to give you a deeper understanding of how an organisation can be run using Lean as a business strategy. Knowledge of Lean production equips you with tools for systematic, ongoing improvement across every part of your organisation.

Lean production is built on a set of principles and techniques embedded in an organisation’s systems and processes, rooted in a distinct business philosophy and strategy that spans the entire organisation. The course gives you an understanding of the core strategies and principles behind Lean production, and lays the groundwork for further study into how today’s world-leading companies run their operations under a Lean business strategy.

The course is structured around five two-day sessions combining discussion-based lectures, hands-on exercises, and analysis of real businesses already practising Lean methodology — including, where possible, a visit to one of these companies.

The course covers the following themes:

  • Strategies and principles of Lean production
  • Stable processes and standardised ways of working
  • Designing value streams
  • Pull and push production systems
  • Quality philosophy and quality methodology
  • Teamwork, engagement and participation
  • Management systems using PDCA methodology
  • Cross-company collaboration along value streams
  • Transforming toward a Lean company culture

Course structure

The course consists of lectures, exercises and simulations (approx. 80 hours), short tests, take-home assignments and project work (approx. 80 hours), and additional independent study (approx. 40 hours). Teacher-led sessions are spread across five two-day meetings.

Mandatory group assignments are completed between sessions, and these also form part of the course’s project work.
