About the course

The main objective of this BRM course is to strengthen your ability as a bridge officer to handle routine tasks and uncertainty during normal and abnormal situations thus enhancing the operational safety and efficiency of the company vessels.

The BTM (*1) part of the course concentrates on the importance of establishing navigational routines and procedures, passage planning skills, and bridge management techniques including the use of modern integrated navigation systems.

The BRM part of the course main focus is, by addressing topics as leadership, sense-making, culture, communication, decision making, assertiveness, automation, to change and strengthen attitudes to establish a safer and more efficient teamwork onboard ship.

Tailor-made BRM training course

It is wanted that the instructors/facilitators have a clear understanding of the special operating conditions of the company’s vessels including the management’s expectations and goals. Continuing discussions with relevant company representatives are planned to be a part of the development of the course.

In addition to the standard BRM/BTM course we propose to emphasize the following topics:

Using the service from a Pilot including common and shared situational understanding, communication both internally within the bridge team and with external entities such as VTS and the different parties’ responsibility for the safe navigation of the vessel.

Understanding the need for international maritime conventions, recommendations, and national legislation.

Collision avoidance rules and the application of the rules in areas with complex traffic situations Simulator facilities.

The course design is based on short scenarios in the simulators followed by a scenario review, discussions, and lectures on relevant topics. You will be able to enhance your skills in communication; bridge and engine teamwork, critical thinking, and contingency planning.

The 16 hours of simulator training in the course are designed to support and make practice of the theoretical part of the course and is particularly aimed at training in demanding and complex situations.

Using company-specific routines, procedures and checklists enhances the exercise output and concurrently verifies their quality.

Learning objectives

The aim is to increase knowledge about human capabilities and limitations and to safeguard positive attitudes to safety and teamwork.

Knowledge of shipboard personnel management, including human error, cross-cultural awareness, situational awareness, complacency, and teamwork.
Ability to apply task and workload management.
Knowledge of and ability to apply effective resource management.
Knowledge of and ability to apply decision-making techniques.
Knowledge of international maritime conventions, recommendations and national legislations.
Prepare and execute a detailed passage plan including contingency planning techniques.
Appreciate the complexity of today’s advanced bridge systems and be able to make maximum use of.
Knowledge and ability to evaluate navigational information to aid in command decisions for avoiding collision and safe navigation of the ship.

Course literature, lunch and coffee are included in the fee.

Course material and schedule will be handed out on the first day of the course.

Cancellation

For the simulator exercises to work properly, there needs to be at least 4 people signed up for the course. If there are not 4 people signed up a month before the course starts, the course will be cancelled.

You can cancel your registration free of charge up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. If you cancel later than that, you will be charged according to the following:

0-2 weeks before the start of the course: 100% of the course fee

2-4 weeks before the start of the course: 50% of the course fee.

Your cancellation of registration must be made in writing to sjofart@chalmers.se. We do accept a colleague in place of the original participant.

If you become ill, you can cancel/reschedule your registration later than four weeks before the start of the course on the presentation of a medical certificate and an administrative fee of SEK 1,000.

You cancel your accommodation following the hotel’s cancellation policy.

Kursen ges på svenska om alla deltagare talar svenska, annars på engelska. Kursbeskrivning och kursmaterial är på engelska.

The course is given in Swedish if all of the attendees speak Swedish, otherwise it will be given in English. The course material is in English.
