Dynamic Positioning Induction (DP-Basic)

About the course

Take the first step towards a DP-certificate. During this course we will introduce you to dynamic positioning both practically and theoretically. The course gives you further information about the DP-system and its different contents, reference systems DP-positions and functions.

At the end of the course you will take an online test according to the standards from the Nautical Institute. The test is carried out on the last day of the course and is corrected automatically by the Nautical Institute.

If you don’t pass the first online test you can do a second attempt within 96 hours. Should you need a third attempt this must be done within 6 months at a Nautical Institute accredited DP-training center.

We are aware of that you as DP-trainee can fail the course because of these rules, but we do not own the rights to the examination. If you do not pass the course you still need to pay the course fee.

Before the course begins this is what you must do

  • At least two weeks in advance – send a copy of your certificate of competence or diploma to the course instructor Mats Gruvefeldt, Chalmers University of Technology, for verification.
  • Go to the web page NI Alexis Platform and create an account via the DP Login function on the web page.
  • When this is done you will receive login details by e-mail. Bring your ID and a passport size photo to the course.
  • A recommendation is that you read about DP and the DP-training scheme on the NI Alexis platform web page before the course starts.

Important information regarding the new standard

A new certification standard was implemented 1 January 2015. The biggest difference between the new and the old standard is that it now only takes 120 days to complete the training for the DP-certificate. 60 days familiarisation period and 60 approved DP sea time days with a DP Simulator course in between. According to the previous standard you needed 30 days of practice and 180 DP sea time days. There are only a few differences in the course content of the courses. They will still be five days each, but you only have four years to complete all elements of the DP training scheme for at certificate counting from the last day of the Induction course.

Certificate

When you have completed and passed the Induction course you will receive a course certificate and a Nautical Institute DP logbook.

Course fee

SEK 20,500 excluding VAT

Course material, as well as lunch and coffee during the course is included in the price.

Course literature and material

Course material and schedule is handed out during the course.

Cancellation

You can cancel your registration free of charge up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. If you cancel later than that, you will be charged according to the following:

  • 0-2 weeks before the start of the course: 100% of the course fee
  • 2-4 weeks before the start of the course: 50% of the course fee.

Your cancellation of registration must be made in writing to sjofart@chalmers.se. We do accept a colleague instead of the original participant.

If you become ill, you can cancel/reschedule your registration later than four weeks before the start of the course on presentation of a medical certificate and an administrative fee of SEK 1,000.

You cancel your accommodation following the hotel’s cancellation policy.

Who is this course for?

Course Participant profile

Maritime deck officers and students on the Maritime deck officer training that want to work on vessels or platforms equipped with DP-systems.

Prerequisites

Minimum required level of competence is a valid Certificate of Competency according to STCW Regulations:

  • A-II/1 Deck – Officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more
  • A-II/2 Deck – Masters and chief mates on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more
  • A-II/3 Deck – Officers in charge of a navigational watch and of masters on ships of less than 500 gross tonnage
  • A-III/1 Engine – Officers in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine-room or designated duty engineers in a periodically unmanned engine-room
  • A-III/2 Engine – Chief engineer officers and second engineer officers on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW propulsion power or more
  • A-III/3 Engine – Chief engineer officers and second engineer officers on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of between 750 kW and 3,000 kW propulsion power
  • A-III/6 ETO – Electro-technical officers

A copy of your diploma must be sent in advance for verification by Chalmers.
